Melanie McLennan

Principal

In 1995 I began studying a Bachelor of Arts/Legal Studies at La Trobe University. After completing this degree I began a Bachelor of Education at RMIT. I began teaching in the year 2000. I completed my Master of Education (Gifted Ed.) in 2005. In 2018 I completed a Graduate Certificate in Principal Preparation from Monash University.

I believe that every child has the right to be taught using evidence based approaches that have been proven to work. Students should leave primary school literate, numerate, and equipped with social and emotional skills to set them up for life. Students and staff should be proud of their school and look forward to attending each day.

My husband Maik is the Live Exhibits Manager at Melbourne Museum and we have two beautiful daughters. We have a dog named Macy and lots of other birds and reptiles living at our house. We love to travel and hope to explore many more parts of the world.

Michelle de Haan

Assistant Principal

Prep/1 Teacher

In 1991, I began studying a Bachelor of Education (Honours) at Victoria University. I began teaching in 1995. I have taught in a range of schools across the western and northern suburbs of Melbourne.

I believe that every child has the right to learn. All students need to be given the opportunity to learn using evidence-based practices. Students need to be given the skills to be both academically and socially / emotionally literate. I am passionate about teaching. I strive to continually improve my knowledge and skills and provide the best learning experiences for my students.

My husband is a general manager of sales for a leading International company. I have two children named Spencer and Cooper and two step sons as well. Being surrounded by boys certainly keeps me on my toes. Lucky my dogs, Maple and Lunar balance things out in our house. I love visiting live theatre, eating at beautiful restaurants and travelling (although have forgotten how to do this).

Alison Wylie

Business Manager

Joining Wattle Glen PS has been a great experience for me, and I am thankful for the opportunity to work with the staff and students.

Many years ago, I studied a Bachelor of Commerce at LaTrobe University. I worked for a couple of private companies before I had my first child and became a Stay at Home Mum. After my third child was born, I returned to work and was later accepted into a Program via the Department of Education to complete relief work in a school office. After my first placement, I was offered ongoing employment, however after five years of working for the same school, I decided to have a break to help my children during home learning. At the beginning of 2022, I decided to re-enter the workforce and was happy to be accepted by WGPS. I thoroughly enjoy working in a school environment and seeing the students smiling faces each day, brightens my day! Every child deserves the privilege to learn in a safe and happy environment, WGPS is exceptional in providing this opportunity.

When I am not working, I am a wife & Mum of three sons. We enjoy holidaying with our caravan and exploring our Great Country, this year we are hoping to get across to WA.

With many years of experience as a dental nurse, I made the exciting decision to shift my career path last year by enrolling in education support. I was thrilled to join Wattle Glen Primary School, a place that holds special significance for me as I grew up in the area.

My husband and I settled in Hurstbridge in 2021, and we’re proud to call this beautiful community home.

I’m passionate about supporting students and creating a positive learning environment. Outside of work, I cherish spending time with my two daughters, aged 7 and 9. Photography is another passion of mine, allowing me to capture precious moments with my family.

Donna Sievers

First Aid

In 2011, I began studying a Bachelor of Education Prep- 12 at Victoria University. During this time, I received a scholarship to teach in East Timor for 3 weeks which was an amazing experience. In 2015, I began teaching as a CRT, working at a range of schools and year levels. I also went overseas to Europe for 8 weeks, where I taught English for a few weeks in Naples, Italy. Since 2017, I’ve been lucky enough to work at Wattle Glen Primary School.

Being a teacher allows me to provide students with the tools and resources they need to further succeed in their learning. I’m dedicated to the success of my students in and outside the classroom and endeavour to encourage, inspire and motivate them to become independent, lifelong learners. I believe it’s my job as a teacher to build positive relationships with my students and discover the ways in which they learn best, using evidence-based approaches. I aim to continuously develop my skills and knowledge as well as be an active member of the school and community.

I currently live with my family. My mums name is Beryl and I also have two younger siblings, Jessica and Brandon. I’m on the hunt for a house in the area I can call my own. On the weekends I enjoy spending time with my friends, going out for brunches and Pilates.

Francesca (Frankie) Ciavola

Literacy Leader

P/1 Teacher

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Teaching in 2001 at Australian Catholic University and began teaching primary school students in 2002. I have worked at many schools and held numerous positions since then, including Adult education.

I believe every child has the right to an evidence-based education where the ‘whole child’ is nurtured and curiosity is fostered. I believe education is a partnership between all stakeholders; family, teachers, support staff, and community, and together we can achieve success for every student.

When I am not working I live in Briar Hill with my three children, Joey, Will and Maya, and our part-time dog Lenny. As a family, we love going on adventures and sharing these with our extended family and close friends.

Kira Elliott

Prep/1 Teacher

In 2017, I began my Bachelor of Primary Education and Disability Studies at RMIT University. During this time, I got to experience many different types of schools and found my passion in teaching at small schools. In 2021, I was fortunate to begin teaching at Wattle Glen Primary School.

As a teacher, I believe that every child deserves to be taught with the best evidence-based approaches available. Students should have a positive educational experience that allows them to grow into independent, lifelong learners that form strong social-emotional skills. By teaching students with these approaches, students are well-equipped with the tools and resources they need to be educated members of our society.

One of the most important things to me is my family. I am very close to my parents and I am fortunate to have their support in everything I do. I also have three siblings, an older sister and brother, as well as a younger brother. We have many pets, which keeps the house busy. On weekends I love to go on road trips, spend time with friends and take my dogs to the beach.

Danielle O’Brian

1/2 Teacher

In 2008 I started by Bachelor of Education, with Early Childhood qualifications, at RMIT University in Bundoora. After completing my degree, I started teaching in 2012 as a Graduate Teacher in the eastern suburbs. I then applied for an ongoing position at another school, where I taught for 8 years, and was Team Leader of the Prep Team for 3 years, before going on Family Leave to start my own family. After having my 3rd child, I did some CRT work at local schools, before starting my part-time role at Wattle Glen P.S in Term 3, 2024, from Monday-Wednesday. This year, I am very much looking forward to being the grade 1/2 teacher, 3 days a week! Make sure you come by and say hi!

As a teacher, I believe that every child has the right to learn and be successful. I love helping students achieve success in their learning, and strive to motivate independence and life-long learning. I also recognise the important of relationships with students, their families and the wider school community.

My Mum, Dad and two younger brothers have always been huge supporters of mine. My partner, Lennie, is a machine operator, and together we have three beautiful children who are our world. As a family, we enjoy spending our time at our speedway racing, going for drives, watching movies, playing at the playground or play centre, kicking the footy at the oval and going for family bike rides and walks. We also love puzzles and boardgames!

Bianca Wickham

1/2 Teacher

In 2011 I completed my Diploma of Education at La Trobe University after studying Psychology and Sociology at Victoria University for 3 years. I began my teaching career at Reservoir West Primary School in 2012, where I have taught for the last 13 years, predominantly in the junior school.

My passion for education is driven by a commitment to providing high-quality teaching that fosters both academic and personal growth. I believe in using evidence-based practices to create engaging, effective learning experiences that nurture curiosity and promote lifelong learning. Equally important is supporting students' social development and emotional wellbeing, as these are essential for their academic achievements. By creating a caring and inclusive environment, I aim to inspire students to reach their full potential, cultivating not just knowledge but also resilience and confidence.

When I’m not working, I live in Montmorency with my husband (Paul), our daughter (Evie) and our dog (Lucy). I love spending time with my family and friends, reading, walking Lucy, family holidays (especially at the beach) and completing puzzles.

Sophie Steele

2/3 Teacher

In 2021 I completed my Masters of Primary Education at La Trobe University before teaching at a school in the northern suburbs. This year I have been fortunate enough to begin teaching at Wattle Glen Primary School.

I believe that that all students should have equal opportunities to reach their full potential and prioritize inclusivity, creativity, and having an evidenced based approach to learning. I am passionate about teaching and continuing to build my skills and knowledge to provide the best learning experiences for my students.

I live with my husband Jordan. On the weekends we love to play boardgames with our friends and work on our garden.

Eleanor Grosomanidis

4/5 Teacher

In 2019, I began my journey to becoming an educator with a Bachelor of Education Studies at Victoria University. I graduated this course in 2021 and commenced my post-grad degree in a Masters of Primary Education the following year. I graduated in December of 2023!

I am passionate about educating and inspiring young minds and believe that all students deserve equitable opportunities to succeed within their classroom. I aim to foster a safe and comfortable space for my students to thrive in whilst providing support for a range of learning and personal needs.

My partner is a landscaper, my Dad is a literacy tutor, my mum was a primary school teacher for thirty years and my brother is going to be a police officer. Within the next couple of years I hope to do some travel, buy my very own first home and have an amazing start to my teaching career. I am very excited to begin my journey at Wattle Glen P.S and cannot wait to meet everyone.

Susannah Warton

5/6 Teacher

In 2011, I completed a Bachelor of Arts at The University of Melbourne majoring in Creative Writing. I returned to The University of Melbourne a few years later and completed my Masters of Teaching (Primary) in 2015.

Since 2016 I have worked as a primary school teacher at a large school in Blackburn. I have taught all year levels and worked as a specialist teacher in this time. I am very excited to join the Wattle Glen PS community this year.

At home I have a husband named Tim and two boys of my own, Huxley who just turned 5 and Asher who is nearly 3. I have a cat named Kirby who sleeps a lot! My AFL team is Carlton and in my spare time I love to cook, hang out with my family and compete in fitness competitions.

Eliza Venosta

Visual Arts Teacher

In my grade 6 report, my teacher wrote that I had a strong sense of justice. Perhaps this statement sent me on a path. I always knew I wanted a job where I advocated for young people but it wasn’t until after completing a B.A. in Youth Affairs and experiencing work in this field that I realised I wanted to go back to uni and get my Graduate Diploma in Primary Teaching.

In 2001, I began my teaching career as a P/1 teacher at Fairfield Primary School and continued to be a junior school classroom teacher for the next 7 years taking on roles such as prep and maths coordinator. It wasn’t until I came back from maternity leave in 2009 that I undertook a series of professional development courses and came back part-time as a specialist teacher at Wattle Glen Primary. I also currently work at Warrandyte Primary as an Arts teacher too.

My move to being a specialist teacher fitted so well with my teaching philosophy which had always been a part of my classroom practice. Students learn when they make links to what they already know. When they can problem solve, complete open-ended tasks, perform experiments, interact with others, and manipulate materials, they are more likely to retain information because they form a connection- it is not just a transmission of information. I love being a specialist teacher at Wattle Glen!

When I am not at work I am hanging out at home with my partner Mark who is a Zoologist and my fabulous daughter who also attended Wattle Glen Primary School in her junior years. We also have an ill-behaved pet dog in the form of an adorable teddy bear-faced Lagotto Romagnolo (Italian water dog for the curious) called Allegra. All four of us love spending time at the beach.

Elizabeth Coventy

STEM Teacher

I grew up in the United States where I earned my Bachelor of Science at the University of Massachusetts in 2002. During that time I studied abroad in Sydney and fell in love with Australia. I went on to complete my Diploma of EducationPrimary and Masters of Education from LaTrobe University. I taught primary school for 6 years and after having children, I became a Behavioral Therapist, gaining much experience supporting students with additional needs.

I strive to support all children to achieve their highest individual potential. I believe every child deserves to feel happy, included and challenged. I feel very fortunate to be part of the Wattle Glen P.S. community this year. I am married with two beautiful children, aged 10 and 12 . My husband, Evan, is a local Aussie and is the Head of Health and PE at a secondary school. Our family enjoys playing sports, travelling, spending time at the beach and spotting all kinds of wildlife.

I’m also a casual relief teacher at other local Primary schools. I love children and have four of my own; Mia 15, Evie 13, Zac 11 and Jax seven. My husband's name is Rick.

When I’m not in the classroom, I’m at sport with my kids. I love sport and play basketball and do CrossFit myself, but my favourite is to watch American Football.

I also love to travel and read.

Jack Cameron

PE Teacher

Out of high school, I started a Bachelor in Sport and Exercise Science before I discovered a love for coaching junior basketball and sports. I promptly changed career paths and in 2017 I began my Diploma of Education Studies at Victoria University, which lead me into a Bachelor of Education (P-12) in 2018, with a major in Physical Education and a minor in Mathematics. During my time in university, I was able to experience a wealth of schools and ages. During my final year of placement, I was fortunate enough to be given an opportunity to teach here at Wattle Glen and have since been, luckily, working here.

As a teacher, I believe everyone has the right to learn and participate to their fullest capabilities. I believe it is important for all students to participate in physical activity, or sport, as it allows students to not only lead a healthy lifestyle but also to develop social skills and build connections within the local communities.

I currently live with my partner Sophie, as all my family live up in Queensland. I play two mid-week basketball games as well as going to the gym to stay fit and active. On the weekends I head down to the footy to watch Collingwood play and spend my time with my mates.

Alyssa O’Connel

Psychologist

I am an Educational and Developmental psychologist and I am privileged to work with kids and families. I love working with schools and families to problem solve and support their child’s needs. I'm excited to join the lovely Allied Health Team here at WGPS.

Since finishing my Masters of Educational Psychology at the University of Melbourne in 2010, I have worked across private practice, for the Department of Education as well as directly in primary and secondary schools, specialist settings and taught at ACU.

Last year I contributed as an author to the Raising Children Network articles on Autism and supporting Neurodivergent kids and families is core to my work.

I recently trained as a Circle of Security Facilitator, and am passionate about understanding attachment, family relationships and the wellbeing of children.

At home, I love being a mum to our delightful 3 primary-aged boys!"

Frances Mylonopoulos

Occupational Therapist

I have been working in Paediatrics for 10 years, following completion of a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and Graduate Certificate in Occupational Therapy (Paediatrics).

I believe that every child is unique, and each follow their own developmental trajectory. Connecting with students and giving them a voice on their learning journey is a key factor for successful participation. No matter how big or small the successes, children should be celebrated for their hard work.

I enjoy travelling with my husband and two kids on the holidays and spend lots of time exploring local sites via bike and foot on the weekends. Having worked in the hospitality industry with my husband for many years, we love our food and spend lots of time cooking in our spare time.

Laura Fumei

Speech Pathologist

I have always loved everything to do with language and literacy! I completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Applied Linguistics, followed by a Masters in Speech Pathology, before commencing as a Speech Pathologist with the Department of Education in 2014. I have had the privilege of working in around 20 schools as a Speech Pathologist through Student Support Services. I’ve also had the opportunity to work in the Department of Education in the Inclusion space and have enjoyed developing new skills and learning from my colleagues.

I care very deeply about helping students to reach their full potential; every student has their unique strengths and skills to offer, which we can harness to help them achieve their goals. I am passionate about inclusion and I am proud to be part of a profession that helps children to express themselves.

My beautiful children are endless sources of fun and energy and remind me every day that joy can be found in the simplest of things.

Caitlin O’Kelly

Education Support

In 2021 I started my certificate III in School-based Education Support, through the Australian College of Teacher Aides and Childcare. When it came to completing my placement, I came here to Wattle Glen Primary. I was lucky enough to be able to join this amazing team!

I believe that all children deserve to feel not only safe at school but also that their words and feelings are being heard. I will work hard to allow each student to grow confidence within themselves and all they do!

Outside of work, I live at home with my parents, who have always been my number one supporters. I have two older brothers with who I am quite close and two little dogs that have far too much energy.

Leticia Sapienza

Education Support

I began my journey at Wattle Glen Primary School in September of this year, after taking the leap and changing careers from retail into Education Support. I’ve loved meeting all of our wonderful students, having chats in the yard and supporting them with their learning in the classroom with our fantastic teachers. I hope to continue to study and improve my skills in education support by training in Auslan in the second half of next year.

Wattle Glen has been an incredible school to begin my career in Education, the level of support offered is such an opportunity to all the students in our care. I believe all children have a right to education and to be able to access the curriculum in a way that accommodates their learning needs. All children have the ability to be great when they are nurtured and allowed to thrive in a safe environment.

My husband and I have two school aged children, Miranda and Luca.  We would one day like to return to Southern Italy for an extended holiday where my husband grew up to show them how beautiful Italy is and to experience a different country to ours.

I strongly believe that all children have the abilities to learn new skills and grow to become a proud member of the community. It just takes one person to believe in them and show them that they care about their success. I am proud to be part of the WGPS community.

I have two children Isaac and Levi. My partner and I would love to travel back to Japan's Ski slopes again soon with our two beautiful energetic boys and show them the joys of skiing/ boarding down a wonderful white snow filled mountain peak.

In my early years, I thought I would become an Archeologist, always having my head in an encyclopaedia reading about Egyptology, or a clothing designer, since I was always on my grandmother’s treadle sewing machine creating things. After high school, I worked in manufacturing which I loved, working with many varied people from all walks of life was a great way to learn about other cultures. I also worked in retail, namely the food sector, greengrocers, seafood and Safeway, again another great way to meet and learn about people. I completed several Tafe courses, getting a taste of many different career options, including Shillington college in Melbourne obtaining a Graphic Design degree.

I worked locally as a Sous Chef for almost 10 years, meeting some of the best people in the hospitality industry. Thinking forward to another career change, and having met so many people in my life and hearing their stories, I made the choice of Librarian or Ed Support Person. I decided to study Education Support as I believe every student has a right to be heard, guided and supported through their education to give them the best chance in life. I studied at Preston Polytechnic, getting a placement at Wattle Glen which firmly secured my love of helping students and showing them that they’re heard and loved when they need it, so they can feel confident going forward in their education.

At home I live with my two daughters, who both attend La Trobe Uni, one studying Business, the other studying Environment and Conservation and we share an old brown dog. In my spare time, I like to attend live music gigs and create as much art and craft as possible. My theory is there is always something new to learn.

I believe that all children have the right to feel safe, respected, included, and supported in all elements of the school environment. I am a strong advocate for inclusive education and strive tocreate a culture that celebrates diversity and builds on the strengths of each student. Where individual learning styles are encouraged and supported by utilising the most upto-date research and strategies that achieve the best outcomes for each student. I am very excited to be joining this wonderful community at Wattle Glen Primary.

My husband Michael is an electrician and we have 3 beautiful children. As a family we all love the beach. On the weekends, you will often find us out surfing or visiting different snorkelling sites around Victoria. One day Michael and I would love to take the kids to Fiji to dive on the beautiful reefs there.

After completing my Certificate III and IV in Business Administration, as well as a Diploma of Management, I spent 17.5 years working in the aquatic environment as a teacher, office manager, and receptionist.

My passion for working with children led me to transition into the education sector, where I began working as an Inclusion Support Worker in Kindergartens. I was fortunate enough to follow one of the children I supported into their school journey, which allowed me to start my career at Wattle Glen Primary School as an Integration Aide. I’m currently working towards my Certificate III in Education Support.

Kyle Templeton

Education Support

My name is Kyle and I am an ES staff member here at Wattle Glen PS.

I grew up as a kid who lived and breathed sport. To this day I am heavily involved in sport when I am not teaching at Wattle Glen. I’ve had many opportunities throughout my childhood playing sport such as playing high level basketball at Diamond Valley, playing junior football at Diamond Creek, even making a rep football squad with the Northern Knights. These opportunities have shown me many ways that people achieve their goals and aspire to be better people everyday. They know how to get the best out of not only themselves but people throughout the environment.

I started my journey of teaching through my schooling at SEDA College were I ran football clinics for kids in primary school and loved every minute of it. I was able to gain a position at WGPS through work experience through my school and Wattle Glen took me in with open arms. I have now been working here at Wattle Glen as a student for 2 years helping and learning through P.E classes and now in a new role as a ES and cannot wait for the new opportunities and learning experiences through the new position.
